アバゴの反射型エンコーダは、発光部（エミッタ）とディテクタを超小型表面実装、リードレスパッケージに収納しています。反射面を持つコードホイールまたはコードストリップと組み合わせて使用することにより、非常にコンパクトなロータリエンコーダまたはリニアエンコーダとして動作し、動きをデジタル信号に変換します。この反射型エンコーダは、発光ダイオード（LED）光源、フォトダイオードで構成されるディテクタ集積回路、エミッタからの光、およびディテクタに入射する光を焦点に収束させるパッケージ一体型レンズの3つの主要要素で構成されています。

反射型エンコーダの動作は、ディテクタICに配置されている複数のフォトダイオードアレーが光の明暗を感知する原理に基づいています。コードホイール/コードストリップに設けてある反射・非反射のスリット・バーが回転または移動することにより、レンズにより収束された光は、明と暗、交互に繰り返しフォトダイオードアレーに入射されます。フォトダイオードから出力されるアナログ信号を内部処理回路によりデジタル信号へ変換し、90度位相角を持つ2チャンネルの出力を生成します。反射型エンコーダと反射面を持つコードホイールまたはリニアコードストリップと組み合わせることにより、従来の透過型エンコーダと比べ、非常にコンパクトかつ薄型のロータリまたはリニアエンコーダを構成できます。
