市場や法令による要求が高まるにつれ、また、はんだ仕上げにおける鉛の使用が環境に悪影響を及ぼす恐れから、エレクトロニクス業界は鉛フリー製品の開発に取り組んできました。
エレクトロニクス製品の大半は、プリント基板に実装された半導体デバイス（スズ(Sn）と鉛（Pb）を含む）を使用しています。環境に悪影響を及ぼすという理由から、規制と市場の動向に促され、サプライヤやお客様は、はんだ仕上げにおける鉛使用を廃止せざるをえなくなりました。廃棄された部品から流出した鉛が水源に流入し、深刻な環境問題を引き起こしました。そのため、エレクトロニクス業界は鉛の代替品の特定と使用に真摯に取り組んできました。
